This year, PayPal and World Vision are calling on Australians to give back to the community by supporting the global #GivingTuesday initiative – being held on the first Tuesday of December.

Taking place in 68 countries around the world, including Australia, #GivingTuesday aims to harness the power of social media to create a global movement dedicated to giving. Now in its fourth year, the initiative hopes to inspire people to improve their local communities by giving to the charities and causes they’re passionate about and through that giving, ultimately help create a better world.

In 2014, #GivingTuesday celebrated a landmark year by raising 101% more funds through mobile devices in the U.S. and Canada than the previous year. The largest donation being a massive $10,000, made on-the-go via a mobile phone. PayPal, a global leader in mobile payments, facilitated the majority of these donations and saw a massive 66% increase in funds raised through its platform by people donating on their way to work, over their morning coffee or in their downtime over lunch or dinner.

Following this success, PayPal is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the most money raised online for a charity in 24 hours. To ensure the record is broken, PayPal has engaged a long list of charity partners across the globe and will be matching 1% of all funds raised through its platform across the month of December.

Here in Australia, PayPal has partnered with World Vision, one of the world’s largest and most-respected charity organisations to be one of the recipients of the funds raised. As part of our commitment to give cheer this festive season, PayPal will match 1% of all donations made to World Vision using PayPal for the entire month of December* – not just for #GivingTuesday!

World Vision has a long history of doing impactful work across the world and PayPal is looking forward to making a difference through the power of social media together.

You too can make a difference to improve our local communities by joining the global #GivingTuesday movement on December 1. If you’re keen to get involved you can donate, volunteer your time or host an activity in your community to give back. Find out more at the #GivingTuesday website or connect on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.
